The one God is for both young and old,
For he is both inner and outer, both above and below.

How can one see God with these earthly eyes?
Zoroaster became a picture for the sake of form.

If you want union with God, seek the pain of his love.
For from his book, and the Creator, a remedy becomes an elixir.

If a thousand enemies come, I have but one refuge: God.
The bow is from the name of God, and Zoroaster is the arrow.

By seeking and finding God, Zoroaster became the pure prophet,
For that people, he became ours – what a happy destiny it was!

Body, why are you deceived? Why do you fake a print upon the robe?
You came from dust, and dust grasps the robe.

God gives peace in one place to both high and low.
The light of God is a celestial body for this servant.

How did my freedom from the bond of God’s hair become possible?
For each of its hairs was a chain to bind me.

Give up the world, Mihraban, you also are like Zoroaster.
Zoroaster is the guide, the prophet, and the master.

Notes

6. “Grasping the robe” (dāman-gīr, holding onto the daaman) means to be totally attached to the master.

Translated by Carl W. Ernst (4/12/2025)

This is the second poem in Khorshed’s songbook, and the second in the Persian series of Persian poems written by young Merwan with the takhallus or pen-name “Mihrabān”. As with the entire series, this is the only source available and very little is known about it. It bears the number (2), has a pencil check mark on the upper left and ends with a double separation line. The original page has a tear on the last character of the 5th stanza and the Gujarātī character દ (d) was guessed from context.

Type of composition and meter

This is a ghazal. The meter goes like this:
– = = = / – = = = / – = = = / – = = = / (hazaj sālim muṯamman)
